Mitochondria, energy, environment.

Mitochondria, energy, environment.

If you could see, feel and hear what your mitochondria do all day every day… you’d realise your whole mind-body is working harder than you realise.

Have you ever thought about how we now live in such a device heavy time that we, and our cells, are swimming in a dense sea of invisible signals?

Light, sound, chemicals, breath, food, movement (or no movement!), toxins, frequencies — every piece of modern life has an energetic fingerprint that our biology must decode and RESPOND to.

Your mitochondria are the final translators of that world.

You may have heard of mitochondria. Maybe you even remember that they make ATP, the 'currency of the cell'... all our cells (apart from red blood cells have them, and many have thousands of them! especially our eyes, brain, heart)

Mitochondria they don’t just make energy;

they make sense of the environment. YOUR environment, inner and outer.

They listen to light, to breath, to nutrients, to emotion, to movement — and then decide how much energy you’ll have for repair, mood, digestion, skin renewal, and joy.

But when that information stream becomes noisy, muddy, dirty — through polluted air, blue-lit days and nights, artificial fragrances and colours and processed foods, and chemical overload — mitochondria lose coherence.

They sense and respond less cleanly.

They generate more stress signals than power, and that gets messy.

That’s when we start to feel flat, foggy, reactive, and disconnected from our natural rhythm.

From each other.

The gift is: WE CAN HELP!!!

they’re listening all the time.

Every sunrise you catch, every deep breath, every clean meal, every night you sleep in darkness — these are conversations that recalibrate your cellular intelligence.

When you choose stillness, sunlight, mineral-rich water, movement, and authentic connection, you are literallyrestructuring your light body from within.

Every time you choose to reduce toxins, you support your mitochondria, your energy, your mood..

And every time you choose simplicity over stimulation, you’re helping your cells remember what harmony and health feels like. Anf you GLOW!!

“Top 12 Mito-Toxins” list, with everyday product examples, and of course simple swap-out ideas you can easily implement, and also share with your people... maybe you are making these common mito mistakes without even realising it?

I have made it simple, as each toxin group includes:

  • Where - Common exposures

  • Effect - How it affects mitochondria / AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor, no worries if you don't know that name!)

  • Swap - Simple reduction strategy

JUNK LIGHT (Chronic Blue Light Exposure)

Where: LED screens and lights on basically everything, phones, TV, indoor/outdoor lighting at night.
Effect: Overstimulates mitochondria, drains resources, shrinks structured water, disrupts circadian mitochondrial repair, which means that they cannot work the same way for you.
Swap: Get - at the very least - morning sunlight, and as many outside or open window or door breaks as possible over the course of the day, dim lights after dusk, use amber or red night bulbs.

nnEMF (Non-Native Electromagnetic Fields)

Where: Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, smart watches, laptops, smart appliances
Effect: Activates voltage-gated calcium channels, which causes cell membrane stress and changes in the way mitochondria can communicate and send/receive signals
Swap: Distance is key! The further away the better. Use airplane mode, keep devices off the body, unplug Wi-Fi overnight, hard-wire where possible.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

Found in:

  • Non-stick cookware (Teflon-type pans)

  • Stain-resistant fabrics (sofa, carpet)

  • Rain jackets, hiking boots, tents, and outdoor gear labelled as water-repellent

  • Some dental floss, waterproof and long lasting makeup

  • Grease-resistant takeaway food wrappers/boxes, microwave popcorn bags, and pizza cartons use PFAS coatings to stop oils from leaking through.

Mito/AhR effect:
Disrupt mitochondrial membranes, reduce ATP output, increase oxidative stress, alter lipid metabolism.

Swap:
Use glass, cast-iron, stainless steel, or ceramic cookware; choose PFAS-free home furniture and untreated fabrics, natural and organic make-up and cleaning products

Phthalates

Found in:

  • Fragranced personal-care products (perfume, body spray, shampoo, aslo nail polishes)

  • Vinyl plastics (shower curtains, cheap toys, PVC clothes)

  • Processed food packaging

Mito/AhR effect:
Impair mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant defences; mimic hormones via AhR and PPAR pathways.

Swap:
Choose “fragrance-free” or NATURAL essential-oil-based products; store food in glass or stainless instead of soft plastics, skip vinyl shower curtains, flooring, and #3 plastics

Bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF)

Found in:

  • Plastic water bottles and takeaway containers, blenders, plastic food containers

  • Tin can linings

  • Thermal receipts (till dockets)

Mito/AhR effect:
Depolarise mitochondrial membranes, increase ROS, interfere with calcium signalling.

Swap:
Use glass or metal drink bottles, avoid microwaving plastics, decline receipts or wash hands afterwards. Use beeswax or silicone istead of plastic wrap.

Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5, Air Pollution)

Found in:

  • Traffic exhaust, tyre wear, smoke from cooking or bushfires

  • Indoor candles, incense, gas heating

Mito/AhR effect:
Generates mitochondrial ROS, damages mtDNA, activates AhR-driven inflammation in skin.

Swap:
Use HEPA filtration or air-purifying plants indoors (THE BEST), ventilate when cooking, walk/exercise near green spaces not traffic corridors.

Heavy Metals (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, Chromium)

Found in:

  • Old paint, contaminated water, some herbal or imported cosmetics

  • Large predatory fish (tuna, swordfish)

  • Cigarette smoke

Mito/AhR effect:
Block ETC complexes, raise oxidative stress, damage mtDNA.

Swap:
Use filtered water (carbon + heavy-metal filter), prefer smaller seafood (sardines, salmon), check older homes for lead paint, support glutathione and structured water production

Organophosphate Pesticides

Found in:

  • Non-organic fruit/veg (especially berries, leafy greens)

  • Garden bug sprays, flea collars

Mito/AhR effect:
Trigger mitochondrial oxidative stress and calcium imbalance; disrupt acetylcholine signalling.

Swap:
Buy organic or wash thoroughly with vinegar + water, use natural pest control (neem, diatomaceous earth)

Dioxins & Dioxin-Like PCBs

Found in:

  • Industrial emissions, incinerated plastics, tap water

  • High-fat animal products (accumulate in fat tissue)

Mito/AhR effect:
Strong AhR activators → chronic inflammation, redox imbalance, mitochondrial signalling disruption.

Swap:
Trim fat from meat, grill instead of char, and choos egrass-fed/organic where possible; avoid burning plastics, filter water or boil it

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Found in:

  • Charred/barbecued foods, cigarette smoke

  • Car exhaust, heating smoke

Mito/AhR effect:
Generate mitochondrial ROS, modify mtDNA and AhR pathways.

Swap:
Cook at lower temperatures, marinate before grilling, avoid smoking or second-hand smoke.

PBDE Flame Retardants

Found in:

  • Foam furniture, electronics casings, car interiors, dust

  • Older mattresses and carpets

Mito/AhR effect:
Disrupt electron transport, thyroid signalling, and redox balance.

Swap:
Vacuum withHEPA filter, wipe surfaces with damp cloth, choosePBDE-free mattresses/electronicswhen replacing items.

Micro- and Nanoplastics

Found in:

  • Bottled water, tea bags with plastic mesh, synthetic clothing fibres, cosmetics with microbeads

  • House dust

Mito/AhR effect:
Localise inside cells, induce ROS, disturb mitochondrial dynamics.

Swap:
Use reusable glass bottles, wash synthetics in micro-catching laundry bags, pick natural-fibre clothing, avoid microbead products.

Extra tip: combine swaps for cumulative benefit

Small, consistent changes reduce load dramatically:

  • Kitchen: ceramic/steel/iron instead of non-stick, glass food storage.

  • Bathroom: fragrance-free personal care and cleaning products

  • Air: filter or open-window, plants

  • Tech/dust: wipe electronics weekly, avoid eating near devices, distance from devices, unplug/switch off

  • Diet: colourful plants, clean proteins, mineral-rich hydration.

Each small swap you make gives them less noise and more energy to do what they’re designed to do — keep you alive, glowing, and resilient. What will you try first??
